The building was completed and purchased from the architect on April 20, 1893 by Alexander A Selkirk & Benjamin J Selkirk

1893 - 1928 - Records - click for historic scans show that this building was built as a storage warehouse for the auction company Ben J. Selkirk & Sons. The auction company was started in 1830. The location of the business from 1830 - 1893 in not known at this date. Records show that the Selkirk's owned this building from 1893 - 1928. In 1896 the great Cyclone tilted the 1808 Chouteau buidling to the west and still has a tilt today. 1937 the Ben J. Selkirk & Sons business moved to 4160 and 4166 Olive Street - Gas Light Square.
